The clearest signs of poor ventilation in a chicken coop are condensation or frost on the interior walls, a sharp ammonia smell at roost height, litter that stays wet instead of drying between cleanings, and birds that sneeze, wheeze, or breathe with an open mouth. Condensation on windows, walls, or the ceiling. Water droplets forming on cold surfaces mean the air inside is holding more moisture than it can release. Stale, still air with no noticeable movement. Stand inside with the door closed for a minute. If you cannot feel any air exchange, even a slight draft near a vent opening, the coop is likely sealed tighter than it should be.

Symptoms of Ammonia Buildup in a Chicken Coop

Ammonia is the fastest-moving problem on this list because it builds invisibly. Chicken manure releases ammonia gas as it breaks down, and in a coop without enough airflow, that gas has nowhere to go.

There is a fast field test. Crouch down to roost height, close your eyes, and breathe normally for ten seconds. Any stinging in your eyes or nose means ammonia is already above 5 to 10 ppm, enough to affect respiratory health with regular exposure. How to Tell If Your Coop's Ventilation Is Inadequate

Beyond smell and moisture, three checks tell you quickly whether the coop has enough vent area for the flock it holds.

  1. Measure your vent openings. Add up the square inches of every vent, gap, and opening, then convert to square feet. Compare that number against the general rule of 1 square foot of vent area per 10 square feet of floor space.
  2. Check for cross-ventilation, not just openings. A single vent on one wall does not move air. You need a high outlet and a low inlet so air actually flows through, not just in and out of the same hole.
  3. Watch what happens after cleaning. If litter you just replaced is visibly damp again within a day or two, and outdoor humidity is not unusually high, the coop is not exchanging air fast enough to keep pace with normal moisture production.
