Cold weather chicken coop ventilation works by keeping vents open above roost height all winter so moist air can escape, while closing or narrowing vents below roost height to cut down on direct draft. The goal is not to keep the coop warm. It is to keep the coop dry. A dry coop at 10°F is safer for a flock than a sealed, humid coop at 30°F.

Most new keepers get this backwards. They see a cold snap coming and seal every gap they can find. That traps the moisture every bird produces overnight, and trapped moisture is what actually causes frostbite and respiratory illness, not the cold air itself.

Why You Cannot Seal a Coop for Winter

Each adult hen releases close to an ounce of water vapor per hour through breathing and droppings. In a coop with eight hens, that adds up to roughly half a pound of moisture in the air every hour, all night, every night. If that moisture has no way out, it condenses on the walls, the ceiling, and the birds themselves.

The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension sets the winter airflow target at about 1 CFM (cubic foot per minute) of fresh air per standard adult hen. That number holds steady whether it is 25°F outside or minus 5°F. It is a moisture target, not a heat target, so the airflow needs to keep moving no matter how cold it gets.

Vent Placement: High Stays Open, Low Gets Adjusted

Cold weather ventilation comes down to where the openings are, not just how big they are.

High outlets (ridge vents, gable vents, soffit vents above roost height) stay open all winter, no exceptions. Warm, moist air rises naturally and needs an exit at the top of the coop. Closing these is the single most common mistake that leads to frostbite.

Low inlets (wall vents, hardware cloth panels, gaps below roost height) bring in replacement air from outside. These are the ones you can dial back in extreme cold. Narrow them, do not seal them completely. Some inlet area has to stay open or the whole exchange stops working, since air needs a way in before it can carry moisture out the top.

This creates a passive loop: cold air enters low, picks up warmth and moisture as it rises past the birds, and exits high. It runs on its own, with no fan required, as long as both ends of the path stay clear.

Sizing Vents for Winter

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension guideline works out to about 144 square inches of total vent area per 10 square feet of coop floor, split roughly evenly between high outlets and low inlets. For a 4x8 coop with 32 square feet of floor space, that is around 461 square inches of total vent area, though only a fraction of that needs to stay fully open in the coldest weeks.

There is no fixed per-bird outlet minimum. Outlet area is always half of total vent area, and total vent area is floor-driven, not bird-driven: 144 square inches per 10 square feet of floor. For the same 4x8, 6-hen coop above, that is 461 square inches total, split evenly, so roughly 230 square inches of outlet, not a flat 6 square inches. Most coops already have more outlet area than a fixed per-bird number would suggest; the mistake is closing it off in cold weather, not undersizing it in the first place.

Adjusting Through the Season

Ventilation needs are not fixed once for the whole winter. A practical adjustment routine looks like this:

  1. Before the first hard frost, confirm high outlets are fully open and unobstructed by leaves, snow, or spider webs.
  2. On nights below 20°F, narrow low inlets by half rather than closing them fully.
  3. After any stretch of condensation on the ceiling, open inlets back up before narrowing them again.
  4. On mild days above freezing, open everything back to normal to flush out any accumulated humidity.

How to Tell the Difference Between Draft and Ventilation

A draft is air moving directly across a roosting bird. Ventilation is air exchanging through the building without hitting the birds at rest. Both involve moving air, so it is easy to confuse them, but the fix for each is different.

Check it yourself on a calm evening: hold a lit stick of incense or a strip of tissue paper at roost height. Smoke or tissue that drifts steadily upward toward the high outlet means the airflow pattern is correct. Smoke that swirls sideways or blows flat at bird height means there is a draft to close, usually a gap at floor level on the wall the birds roost against.

Signs Your Winter Ventilation Needs Adjusting

Two checks at dawn, before the coop warms up, catch most problems early:

  • Frost or condensation on the ceiling boards means overnight humidity climbed too high. Open the high outlets further or reduce how tightly bedding is packed.
  • An ammonia smell at knee height means airflow is not reaching floor level. Add or widen a low inlet on the opposite wall from where the birds roost.
